How to Write the Georgia Tech Supplemental Essay
PROMPT: Why do you want to study your chosen major specifically at Georgia Tech? (300 words)
This This prompt instantly stands out as a combination of the classic “Why Us?” and “Why This Major?” college essays. This is great because it allows you to use your crafted skillset from similar essays or even reuse narratives you have already crafted, especially during the regular decision cycle, where time is of the essence.
A great way to start off with is devoting about half of the word count to each sub-essay in this prompt: explaining why you want to study your area of interest and then transitioning to why Georgia Tech is the best place to do so. You can reuse and slightly adapt a previous “Why This Major?” essay. If you are reusing an essay, make sure to make any revisions if your intended major differs slightly between universities (i.e. different specializations/departments).
If you do not yet have a “Why This Major?” essay, here are some tips for getting started: Begin your essay with a hook — what specific moment ignited your interests, what story or question or idea kept you awake at night — and from there, develop a story of how your passion for the major at hand was developed, highlighting relevant experiences and extracurriculars. Finally, make sure to end with what you can do with your major, what amazing things do you hope to accomplish, discover, and innovate.
For the “Why Us?” part of the essay, make sure to show genuine interest in attending Georgia Tech. Things to avoid would be to remark on the school’s prestige or the ranking of your intended major. Things to focus on would be the university’s unique campus culture, extracurricular opportunities, and the benefits of its location. Oftentimes, universities have programs or initiatives that they are known for and promote heavily. Make sure to do your research to find the special initiatives that Georgia Tech prides itself on, especially for your intended major, such as a desire for a diverse and interdisciplinary learning environment. Describe how you envision yourself engaging with the community to showcase the benefits you bring to the table.
